Leonardo
18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. 19 And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book. - Rev 22:18-19 (NIV)
25 They have exchanged the truth of God for falsehood, by worshipping and serving created things, rather than the Creator — praised be he for ever. Amen. 2 - Rom 1:25-26 (CJB)
3 For the time shall be when they will not bear sound teaching; but according to their own lusts will heap up to themselves teachers, having an itching ear;
4 and they will turn away their ear from the truth, and will have turned aside to fables. - 2 Tim 4:3-4 (Darby)
When all of the da Vinci nonsense exploded world-wide, I knew I had to write something about it. The tight rope, however, was the time-sensitive issue. The whole charade was so stinkin’ bogus, I knew its fad appeal would fade out as quickly as it had popped up. So, I decided to take my time and try to craft something that would be as trans-trendy as possible; and, considering the debris trail it left in its wake, this ended up not being as much of a balancing act as I’d thought.
There’s no denying the obvious --- Leonardo da Vinci was an exceptional genius at just about every level imaginable. It’s ridiculous how far ahead of his time this renaissance-man was. During his “reign”, without question, he clearly achieved a god-like status, even among his contemporary peers. And yet, with all of these devine giftings he still chose to remain a cynic and profoundly open with his hedonistic ways; proving the post-modern hindsight that tells us repeatedly “the gift is greater than the man”.
What’s so tragic about this code concoction is how it truly had nothing to do with Leonardo’s ingenious works of art, or his “intentions” for creating them. When his now-infamous fresco of the upper room was discovered, not only was it grossly eroded and then arbitrarily painted over, but was originally created some 1500 years
after the Last Supper event even took place. And, yet, our incredibly gullible, Godless generation treated it like it was a Polaroid, and exalted the artist as the greatest conspirator to have ever lived.
There were so many fallacies that I wanted to address that I simply ran out of room in the traditional song lyric approach. That’s when I decided to just have an imaginary conversation with the man himself. Sort of like puppet therapy. Throw some rhetorical questions into the mix and every issue seemed to get justified. It was my way of not letting shameless lies have the last word. We become so mesmerized by the divine gifting that we’re completely turned around whenever we’re presented with the Giver of the divine. We tend to worship the creation instead of the Creator. This song was my chance to bring some clarity to it all…my little pluck at the “world-wide web” of deceit.
Lyrics

LEONARDO
DO YOU KNOW
WHAT YOU’VE STARTED
WITH YOUR BRUSHSTROKES
OUR WORLD’S GROWN
MORE DIVIDED
WHAT WAS YOUR INTENTION
WITH REGARD TO YOUR DEPICTION
OF THAT NIGHT WE HOLD SO CLOSE
WAS IT HOLY VISION
OR JUST CYNICAL AMBITION
WHEN YOU MADE THEM STRIKE THAT POSE
LEONARDO
LEONARDO
YOUR FRESCO
STILL ASTOUNDS US
WITH EVERY DETAIL
WE ALL HAVE HAILED
YOUR GENIUS
SURELY SOMEONE RARE AS YOU
COULD SEE WHAT NO ONE ELSE COULD VIEW
TO CAPTURE PURE DEVINE
BUT SCANNING THROUGH THAT UPPER ROOM
IT’S POPULAR TO NOW ASSUME
GOD’S TRUTH HAS BEEN DESGUISED
OH, BUT…
WERE YOU THERE
DID YOU WATCH HIM BREAK THE BREAD
WERE YOU THERE
DID YOU HEAR EACH WORD HE SAID
DID YOU TASTE THE WINE HE BLED
LEONARDO
I DIDN’T THINK SO
LEONARDO
YOUR ELOQUENCE
IS FADING
LIKE A LOST SOUL
YOUR HALOS
LAY DECAYING
I GUESS SOME THOUGHT IT CLEVER
TO INVENT THE GRAND ENDEAVOR
TO UNDERMINE HIS THRONE
BUT TRAGICALLY THE JOKE’S ON YOU
THAT EMPTY CODE, WE’VE SEEN RIGHT THROUGH
YOUR CANVAS SHOT WITH HOLES
LEONARDO
ONE MORE QUESTION CONCERNING YOUR ART
HAVE YOU EVER CAPTURED HIS HEART
LEONARDO
I DIDN’T THINK SO
